History
The hot spring of Valdieri has been known to local populations since time immemorial. The first document regarding its exploitation dates back to 1588, when the municipality of Valdieri built the first spa facility. In 1755, the King of Sardinia, Charles Emmanuel III, decided to use the Valdieri spa for himself, prompting the construction of a new thermal building, nicknamed 'il Baraccone.' After the Napoleonic wars, the Savoy family returned to take an interest in the spa, and between 1830 and 1833, a road was built connecting the spa to the hamlet of Sant'Anna di Valdieri. A new impetus came in 1855, when a company was established to build a real thermal facility. In 1857, King Vittorio Emanuele II visited the facility, and it was on this occasion that the process began that would lead to the establishment of the Royal Hunting Reserve of Valdieri. In this context, Vittorio Emanuele II had a summer residence built in Sant'Anna, hunting houses in San Giacomo di Entracque and in the Valasco valley, and four chalets near the spa, one of which was intended for the beautiful Rosina. Two of them are still present today. Also in 1857, he laid the cornerstone of a hotel that is now the Royal Hotel Wellness Center of the Valdieri Spa. Since then, there have been subsequent renovations and modernization interventions.
The current management of the Royal Spa of Valdieri is family-run, with the Bonetto family, who has passionately dedicated themselves to hospitality since the late 1970s, offering an authentic and personalized experience to visitors.
Therapeutic Information on Waters
The thermal waters of Valdieri belong to the group of hyperthermal sulfate-chloride-sodium waters and have an alkaline pH. The temperature of the deep aquifer is 130°C, corresponding to a depth of 4,500 meters below the earth's surface. The active ingredient in these waters is sulfur, which is absorbed by the body as elemental sulfur and, through the skin, as hydrogen sulfide and polysulfides, which are highly diffusible through the intestinal, bronchial, and genito-urinary mucosa. The anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antiseptic, anti-exudative, and eutrophic activity of the thermal water of Valdieri makes it suitable for treating illnesses related to the locomotor system, otorhinolaryngological, bronchopulmonary, dermatological conditions, and certain gynecological issues.
The Royal Spa of Valdieri is affiliated with the National Health Service, offering patients the opportunity to benefit from thermal treatments with public healthcare support.
Treatments and Therapies
At the Royal Spa of Valdieri, various thermal methods are available, including: natural caves, balneotherapy, thermal algae or 'molds', inhalation therapies, endo-tympanic insufflation, micronized nasal showers, collective nebulizations, and vaginal irrigations. In addition, complementary methods such as massage therapy, kinesitherapy, hydrokinetic therapy, and aesthetic treatments are practiced. The thermal treatments are affiliated with the National Health Service.
The Royal Spa of Valdieri also offers a cosmetic line called ALGAVAL®, produced by TERMES Srl laboratories. This line includes products for facial and body care such as creams, gels, masks, sunscreens, shampoos, and foaming baths, all made with thermal algae extracts and subjected to stringent microbiological controls, with no animal testing.
Features
- Natural caves: The natural caves are directly heated by the thermal springs, providing an environment rich in sulfurous steam with relative humidity of 98-99%. The water temperature ranges between 51 and 58°C, heating the environment to temperatures between 35 and 46°C. This atmosphere is rich in hydrogen sulfide, which has beneficial effects on mucous membranes, cartilage, and skin, with anti-inflammatory, mucolytic, and immune-stimulating actions.
- Sulfurous thermal water: The thermal waters are classified as sulfurous sulfate-chloride-sodic hyperthermal waters (50-75°C) with an alkaline pH (9.4). These waters are used in various therapeutic treatments, including balneotherapy, inhalations, and endonasal insufflations, for the treatment of rheumatic, dermatological, gynecological, and respiratory tract diseases.
- Thermal algae: The thermal algae, unique in Italy, are cultivated and used for therapeutic purposes, particularly for dermatological and rheumatological conditions. They grow thanks to the thermal waters and the particular climate of the region, representing a distinctive element of the place.
