General Information
The Agnano Thermal Baths, located just a few minutes from downtown Naples in the lush Agnano Valley, offer thermal pools, natural saunas, and therapeutic treatments with mineral waters rich in trace elements. Access to the thermal pools is permitted from the age of 14, while the natural saunas are currently closed. The complex has a large parking area with hourly or daily rates.
History
The origins of the Agnano Thermal Baths date back to the 3rd century BC, when the Greeks recognized the benefits of the thermal waters and built a temple dedicated to Igea, the goddess of health. In the 1st century AD, the Romans constructed an impressive thermal complex on seven levels, partially visible today. During the Middle Ages, the site thrived until a violent earthquake submerged the valley, giving rise to Lake Agnano. After the reclamation of the lake at the end of the nineteenth century, the rich thermal heritage of Agnano resurfaced. In the early twentieth century, the construction of a majestic facility marked the rebirth of Neapolitan thermalism. Agnano became a renowned thermal destination until World War II. Afterward, part of the structure was demolished to make way for a modern thermal care center and a hotel.
Therapeutic Information on the Waters
The waters of the Agnano Thermal Baths are of the sulphurous-saline-bicarbonate-alkaline-terrous type, consisting of sodium chloride, iodine, bromine, calcium, bicarbonate, and sulfurs. One of the most evident effects of crenotherapy with these types of waters is the pro-inflammatory stimulus obtained in the first days of therapy, which evolves into an anti-inflammatory action by the end of the treatment cycle and lasts for several months. This occurs through a combination of mechanisms: stimulation of the immune system, antiseptic action, anti-edematogenic action, anti-fibrotic action, and endocrine action. The waters are used for inhalations, insufflations, aerosols, irrigations, pulmonary ventilation, baths, muds, and stoves. The classical indications for thermal therapies are chronic-degenerative pathologies affecting various systems outside the acute phase, which represents the main contraindication, along with tumors, tuberculosis, kidney failure, and heart failure.
Treatments and Therapies
The Agnano Thermal Baths offer a wide range of therapeutic treatments, including: inhalation therapies, treatments for peripheral vascular diseases, therapies with dry heat stoves, treatments for rhinitis-related hearing loss, controlled pulmonary ventilation therapies, vaginal irrigation treatments with baths, vaginal irrigation treatments, therapeutic massages, instrumental examinations, and specialist medical visits. The natural dry heat saunas, powered by volcanic fumaroles, are structured in various interconnected rooms, with temperatures ranging from 40°C to 70°C, characterized by low water vapor content and high levels of hydrogen sulfide and mineral salts. Due to these characteristics, they promote copious sweating and a vigorous detoxifying action on the entire organism, benefitting both rheumatic patients and those suffering from respiratory and skin diseases, as well as individuals who are overweight. Inhalation therapies for children are administered in a dedicated space. To carry out thermal treatments under the National Health Service, a prescription from a general practitioner or pediatrician is required, along with an ASL prescription filled out with personal data, treatment cycle, and the relevant pathology. Each citizen is entitled to only one treatment cycle per year under the agreement, except for those patients who, due to pathology or disability, fall into the exemption categories, for which two treatment cycles per year are allowed.
