General Information

Terme Sibarite is a thermal station located in Cassano allo Ionio, Calabria, renowned for its sulfurous waters and for providing thermal and rehabilitation services. The facility has five thermal rehabilitation pools, used for aquagym, vascular pathways, hydro-massage, and balneotherapy. Moreover, it features a neuromotor rehabilitation center and hydrokinetic therapy, accredited by the National Health Service, and offers medical consultation services with highly qualified personnel. The onsite hotel has 76 rooms equipped with all comforts, with options for half-board or full-board. The thermal waters emanate from five natural springs: Appicello, Caldane, Stufe, Clocco, and Trabucco, maintaining a constant temperature of 25°C. These waters are classified as hypothermal, sulfurous, and medium-mineral, and are used for baths, mud treatments, inhalations, irrigations, and hydro-massages, effective for treating articular rheumatic diseases, respiratory system disorders, rhino-genic deafness, and gynecological affections. The thermal mud, of organic nature, is obtained from the phyto-biological maturation processes of algae present in the sulfurous waters, representing a biological rarity in Italy. The facility was renovated in 2018 for the inhalation and mud therapy departments, and a new SPA was opened in 2022. The address is Via delle Terme 2, 87011 Cassano Allo Ionio (CS), with rehabilitation center hours from Monday to Friday 07:30 to 13:30 and 15:00 to 17:00, and Saturday from 07:30 to 13:30. The thermal facility operates from May to November, with hours from Monday to Saturday 07:00 to 11:00 and 15:00 to 19:00.

History

The first records concerning Terme Sibarite date back to the time of the Sibari and Romans in the 7th century. In the 19th century, the waters of Cassano all'Ionio were widely known not only as a thermal establishment but also as a drinking water source. In 1817, on the ruins of the ancient baths, some structures were built for using the waters. However, it was not until 1822 that the high school teacher from Catanzaro, Aceti, along with Giovanni Terrano and the College of Physicians of Florence, conducted a chemical analysis of the waters, documenting its components in the catalog of the National Exhibition. The building was subsequently abandoned and only in 1952 was it purchased by the Public Limited Company Terme Sibarite, which commissioned extensive scientific research to verify its beneficial properties, attributable to the high sulfur content. The baths reopened in 1969, in the presence of Francesco Principe.

Therapeutic Properties of the Waters

The thermal waters of Terme Sibarite are classified as hypothermal, sulfurous, and medium-mineral, with a constant temperature of 25°C. They originate from five natural springs: Appicello, Caldane, Stufe, Clocco, and Trabucco, which develop over approximately 500 meters. A distinctive aspect of these waters is the presence of biogenic hydrogen sulfide, derived from the decomposition of sulfurous organic matter by specific bacterial activities. This provides the waters with unique therapeutic properties, effective in treating articular rheumatic diseases, respiratory system disorders, rhino-genic deafness, and gynecological affections. The thermal mud, obtained from phyto-biological maturation processes of algae present in the sulfurous waters, represents a biological rarity in Italy and is used for thick applications and eudermic mud treatments.
