Terme Luigiane is the oldest and most renowned healing station in Calabria, with a history dating back centuries. It was mentioned by Pliny the Elder and referenced in a letter from 1446 signed by Saint Francis of Paola.
In 1571, Barrio and later Marafioti in 1601 described the 'acquae putidae' of Terme Luigiane as the boundary of the endowed estates. In the 18th century, several authors, including Abbot Pacichelli in 1703, praised the therapeutic properties of the thermal waters.
In 1850, Neapolitan physician Giovanni Pagano published the 'Treatise on the Thermal-Mineral Waters of Guardia Lombarda', the first scientific study on the sulfurous waters of Terme Luigiane, highlighting their therapeutic effectiveness.
